WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Washington Power, of the National Lacrosse League, announced on Tuesday, June 19 that Jeff Shirk was acquired through a trade with the Calgary Roughnecks. The Power traded a fourth round pick in the 2001 National Lacrosse League Entry Draft in exchange for Shirk. Calgary acquired Shirk just last Friday, June 15, 2001 when they used their 24th pick in the 2001 National Lacrosse League Expansion Draft to take him from the Philadelphia Wings.

"Having drafted Jeff while with the Philadelphia Wings, I know firsthand what kind of an impact player he could be," stated Steve Govett, General Manager and Executive Vice President of the Washington Power. "We are thrilled to have Jeff on the roster and look forward to giving him the opportunity to make contributions on the field."

Shirk, a six foot two inch, 205 lb defensive player who graduated from the University of Maryland was a dominating force for the Terrapins as a 2000 All-American candidate, a preseason first-team All-American by Face-Off Magazine '00 and a preseason third team All-American by College Lacrosse USA. He has a serious reputation as an explosive and devastating hitter and was called the best short-pole defensive midfielder in America by Maryland Coach Dick Edell. Shirk, from Mountain Lakes, NJ was on the Philadelphia Wings roster for one season.
