Coach John Haus will lead the Tar Heels into his second year as head mentor with Carolina opening the 2002 campaign at home against Ohio State on Saturday, February 16, 2002 at 1 p.m. The Tar Heels, 6-6 in 2001, will play eight of their 12 regular season games at home in 2002. The Tar Heels have added Ohio State, Denver, Loyola and Hofstra to their docket next year while dropping Fairfield, Butler and Pfeiffer from the list of opponents played in 2001.

The 2002 ACC Tournament will be played at Duke University in Durham, N.C. for the first time since 1991. One of Carolina's four regular-season road trips will be to play the Blue Devils in Durham on Wednesday, March 20.

Seven of Carolina's 12 regular-season opponents in 2002 are teams, which were selected to play in the 2001 NCAA Tournament. Maryland, Johns Hopkins, Loyola and Hofstra were all NCAA quarterfinalists this past year while Duke, Virginia and Bucknell were also in the tournament's 12-team field.

The 2002 schedule will include three games against teams coached by Carolina alumni--Ohio State, coached by Joe Breschi, '90, Navy, coached by Richie Meade, '76, and Delaware, coached by Bob Shillinglaw, '74. Carolina will also play UMBC, which is coached by Don Zimmerman, an assistant coach at Carolina from 1978-82.
