Duke Sets School Record With Eight Lax All-Americans

DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke men's lacrosse team, which finished the 1999 campaign with a 13-3 record and an appearance in the NCAA quarterfinals, placed a school-record eight players on the STX/USILA Division I All-America team. It marks the most All-America selections in Duke history, breaking the previous record of seven picks in 1997. Duke, along with Johns Hopkins, boasted the most All-America selections in the country.

Three Blue Devils named to All-America teams are underclassmen. Junior defender Stephen Card (Princeton, N.J.) led the way as Dukes lone first-team pick. Card was a third-team selection in 1998. Midfielder Nick Hartofilis (Huntington, N.Y.), also a junior, was named second team All-America after scoring 23 goals and contributing three assists on the season. Dukes leading scorer in 1999, junior attackman Jared Frood (Elbridge, N.Y.), earned third-team honors after leading the Blue Devils with 61 points on 34 goals and 27 assists.

Blue Devil senior midfielder Scott Diggs (Pasadena, Md.) made his third straight appearance on the All-America team, earning third-team honors in 1999 after being named to the first team as a junior and honorable mention as a sophomore. Fellow senior Tim Knowles (Wilton, Conn.) was also named a third-team All-America at midfield. Knowles was an honorable mention selection last season.

Three Blue Devils were named to the honorable mention All-America team. Attackmen T.J. Durnan (Rockville Centre, N.Y.), a junior, and John ODonnell (Wilton, Conn.), a senior, both earned honorable mention honors. Sophomore Matt Breslin (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) was named an honorable mention at goalkeeper.
