June 5, 2000

DURHAM, N.C. -- The Duke men's lacrosse team, which finished with an 11-5 record and an NCAA quarterfinal appearance for the fourth straight year, has garnered several post-season honors. Four members of the squad were named to the USILA/STX All-America teams, while two players were named Scholar All-Americas and two earned spots in the North-South All-Star game.

Senior Stephen Card (Princeton, N.J.), considered one of the nation's premier defenders, was named a first-team All-America for the second straight year. He is Duke's 10th first-team All-America, and is only the second Blue Devil in program history to earn two first-team honors. Charles Gilfillan was the first, earning All-America status in 1948 and '51.

Another senior, Nick Hartofilis (Huntington, N.Y.) earned second-team All-America honors, also for the second consecutive year. Hartofilis was a midfielder who ranked fourth on the team in scoring with 25 goals and four assists in 2000.

Both Card and Hartofilis were also selected to participate in the North-South All-Star Game. The annual contest showcases the best seniors in collegiate lacrosse. Each school is allowed up to two selections to the North-South squads.

Duke's leading scorer this season, attacker T.J. Durnan (Rockville Centre, N.Y.), earned third-team All-America honors after scoring 42 goals and 21 assists and leading the ACC in goals scored. Durnan was also an honorable mention All-America selection in 1999.

The other half of Duke's highly-regarded senior attack tandem, Jared Frood (Elbridge, N.Y.) was an honorable mention All-America in 2000. Frood finished his career 10th on Duke's all-time scoring chart with 178 points (99 goals, 79 assists).

Durnan and Frood were also named to USILA Scholar All-American squad. The 24-member team consists of seniors who have excelled academically, athletically and as citizens of their respective communities. Honorees must have compiled a GPA of at least 3.2 and be named to the either All-America team or North-South squads.

All the award winners will be recognized at the annual Lacrosse All-American dinner on June 9 at the University of Delaware. The North-South All-Star Game will be played the following day at Delaware's Rullo Stadium.
