UVa in the NCAA Tournament:
The Series vs. the Terrapins
This is the seventh time in the last eight years the teams have met twice in a season (by virtue of the ACC or NCAA Tournaments). The teams have split the series three times during this span (`96, `97, `01). Virginia took both meetings in 1999 and 2000, while Maryland won both in 1998.
This is the fourth time the teams have met in the NCAA Tournament and the first since 1997. Maryland has won every previous meeting including a 10-9 quarterfinal win in College Park six years ago.
All three previous meetings have occurred in the quarterfinals. In addition to the 1997 match-up, Maryland also won in 1978 (15-10) and 1983 (13-4).
The teams also have a lively history of facing each other in the ACC Tournament. Overall they have met seven times in the tourney with UVa winning three times.
Maryland won the season's first meeting 8-7 in Charlottesville on March 29. It was the Terps' first regular season win since 1998. Overall Virginia has won six of the last eight meetings going back to 1999.
Throughout the early 1990s the series was characterized by many tight games, including one stretch from 1991-1997 where 10 of 11 games were decided by one or two goals.
The trend of tight games was interrupted between 1998-2001 when eight straight were decided by at least three goals, including six in a row that were all decided by four-or-more goals. However, the last two games have resurrected the close game trend. Virginia won in College Park 11-10 last season, while as mentioned, Maryland won this year's game 8-7 in Charlottesville. In both cases the losing team had a chance to tie the score in the waning seconds, but wasn't able to get the needed goal to do so.
Maryland's 40 wins over Virginia are the second-most wins by any school over the Cavaliers. Johns Hopkins has defeated UVa 52 times.
Meanwhile, Virginia's 30 wins in the series make the Terps fourth on UVa's list of most beaten opponents (UVa has defeated Duke 47 times, Washington & Lee 42 times and North Carolina 40 times).
Virginia in the NCAAs
Virginia has a 29-24 all-time playoff record and is fourth in tournament wins behind Johns Hopkins (49), Syracuse (44) and Maryland (34).
Senior Class Makes Third Final Four Appearance
Overall the Cavaliers have reached the final four 16 times-twice under Glenn Thiel (1972-73), seven times under Jim Adams (1979-80-81-82-85-86-88) and seven times under Starsia (1994-95-96-99-2000-02-03).
Virginia has played in the finals on six occasions (1972-80-86-94-96-99) and won the championship in 1972 and 1999.
11th Consecutive NCAA Appearance
Previously, the Cavaliers made nine straight trips to the NCAAs under head coach Jim Adams from 1978-86.
Virginia's 11-year run is the fourth-longest current streak in the nation. Schools with longer streaks are Johns Hopkins (32), Syracuse (21), and Princeton (14).
Cavaliers Earn NCAA Second Seed
The Cavaliers have had pretty good success throughout the years living up to their second seed. They have advanced to the semifinals three previous times (1972-95-2000) and won the first NCAA title in the program's history as the second seed in 1972.
13 Wins Tie School Record
The 1994 squad was the first to win 13 games in a season.
The Cavaliers join Johns Hopkins and Massachusetts for the most wins in the nation this spring. |
