No. 3 Terps To Battle No. 6 Towson In Men's Lacrosse Quarterfinals
May 12, 2001 CATONSVILLE, Md. - The No. 3 seeded Maryland men's lacrosse team will take on No. 6 seeded Towson in the NCAA Quarterfinals at Byrd Stadium next Sunday, May 20. The Terps (13-2) will battle the Tigers (13-3), after Towson advanced in the NCAA Tournament with a 12-10 win over Duke on Saturday at UMBC Stadium. The Maryland-Towson game will be the first in the doubleheader at Byrd, starting at Noon. The second game, starting 45 minutes after the conclusion of the first game will pit No. 4 seed Johns Hopkins against the winner of the Notre Dame/Bucknell game to be played on Sunday, May 13 in West Point, N.Y. (The result will be available on umterps.com once the game is over on Sunday.) "I have to say the Towson team that I saw out there was not the same team we played on March 10," said head coach Dick Edell, who watched the games at UMBC. "Goalie John Horrigan and faceoff man Justin Berry seem to be as healthy as anyone on the field. I think it will be a great game and a very emotional one as well." Edell has a strong personal connection with Towson. He graduated from the school in 1967 and was inducted to the school's Athletic Hall of Fame in 1980 for his lacrosse prowess. Edell has led Maryland to seven straight wins over the Tigers, including that March 10th game, a 9-7 Maryland win at Towson. Maryland holds an 18-4 lead in the all-time series with Towson. The coach isn't the only member of the Maryland lacrosse to have personal ties to Towson. Maryland's leading goal scorer Andrew Combs, is the son of Towson football coach Gordy Combs. Also, the mother of Maryland brothers Dan LaMonica and Mike LaMonica, Linda Filbert is the assistant gymnastics coach at Towson.
No. 7 seed Loyola defeated Georgetown, 11-9 in the other first round game at UMBC. The Greyhounds will face No. 2 seed Princeton next Saturday, May 19 at Hofstra.
