Tar Heels Face Unbeaten Limestone Wednesday
May 4, 2004 CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina men's lacrosse team returns to the field for the first time in 12 days Wednesday when the Tar Heels play host to undefeated Limestone (14-0) at Fetzer Field at 7 p.m. Admission is free. The Tar Heels are currently ranked No. 7 in the Geico/STX NCAA Division I coaches poll and they are looking to bounce back from a stinging 11-9 loss to Virginia in the ACC Tournament semifinals on April 23. Limestone is undefeated at 14-0 and the Saints are tied for the No. 1 spot in this week's Geico/STX NCAA Division II poll with LeMoyne. LeMoyne is also undefeated at 12-0. UNC's four losses this year have come by a total of five goals, including one-goal losses to No. 1 Johns Hopkins, No. 2 Navy in overtime and No. 3 Maryland. UNC needs two wins this week to clinch its first NCAA Tournament bid since 1998. Carolina closes its regular season with a noon game Saturday against No. 6 Ohio State. The Buckeyes are 12-2 and they have the longest winning streak in NCAA Division I at 11 games. The Tar Heels are led in scoring by junior attackman Jed Prossner who has 30 goals and 10 assists for 40 points. Sophomore attackman Scott Falatach has 15 goals and 12 assists for 27 points and junior attackman Mike McCall has 22 goals and four assists for 26 points. Sophomore attackman Ryan Blair has 13 goals and 10 assists for 23 points while junior midfielder Bryant Will has eight goals and 14 assists for 22 points. UNC starts a defense of seniors Ronnie Staines and Matt Pessagno along with sophomore Stephen McElduff. Junior goalkeeper Paul Spellman allows an average of 8.46 goals per game and save .602 of the shots on goal against him.
Senior midfielder Kevin Frew leads the nation in ground balls per game. He has a total of 93 this season. He is also among the nation's leaders in faceoffs as he has won 154 of 246, a winning percentage of .626.
