GREENSBORO, N.C. - Pairings for the 2011 Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Lacrosse Championship have been determined, as announced by the league office on Saturday, April 16. Duke locked in the No. 1 seed in the upcoming ACC two-day tournament, which will take place April 22 and 24 on the campus of Duke University in Durham, N.C.
Duke, which serves as host for this year's league championship, concluded the regular season with a flawless 3-0 league mark to earn the top seed. The Blue Devils will face fourth-seeded Virginia (1-2 ACC) for the second time in seven days on Friday, April 22 at 7:30 p.m. ET in the second semifinal match-up of the ACC Championship. Duke edged the Cavaliers, 13-11 earlier today, earning the team’s seventh regular season crown and fifth in the last seven years.
The other semifinal game on Friday, April 22, features second-seeded North Carolina (1-2 ACC) versus third-seeded Maryland (1-2 ACC), which square off at 5:00 p.m. ET at the Blue Devils’ Koskinen Stadium.
The Tar Heels earned the No. 2 seed based on league's seeding tie-breaker policies, following a three-way tie for second place in the standings between North Carolina, Maryland and Virginia. All three squads finished 1-1 against each other and all fell at the hands of top-seeded Duke earlier in the season. The determining factor came down to goal differentials between tied teams - giving North Carolina the clear advantage.
Last season, top-seeded Virginia won the 2010 ACC Men's Lacrosse Championship with a 10-6 victory decided on Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium on the campus of the University of Maryland.
