Virginia's Adam Ghitelman Earns ACC Men's Lacrosse Weekly Honor

March 30, 2009

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Virginia's Adam Ghitelman was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Lacrosse Player of the Week for the period ending on Sunday, March 30. Ghitelman turned in a tremendous performance in leading Virginia to a 10-9 win over Maryland in seven overtimes, the longest game in Division I history. His play prevented Maryland from capturing the ACC regular-season championship outright.

The sophomore from Syosset, N.Y., made a career-high 22 saves, the most by a Virginia goalie in five years, while allowing just nine goals. Six of Ghitelman's saves came in the seven overtimes (on 13 Maryland shots) and several were from point blank range. Ghitelman did not allow a goal in the final 38:32. His stellar goalkeeping prevented Maryland from scoring on four man-up opportunities after halftime.

In addition, Ghitelman had five ground balls, the second-highest total on the team.

Virginia plays North Carolina Saturday in the first game of the Big City Classic tripleheader at the Meadowlands in New Jersey. The game is set to face-off at noon and will be televised by ESPNU.
