BALTIMORE, Md. -- Sixth-seeded Towson received three goals each from Josh Tankersley, Ryan Obloj and Brian Myers to post a 12-10 win over Duke in the opening round of the 2001 NCAA Men's Lacrosse Tournament held on the campus of UMBC in Baltimore, Md.

Towson improves to 13-3 and advances to meet third-seeded Maryland next Sunday in College Park, Md. Duke closes out the year at 11-6.

Towson's Tankersley snapped an 8-8 tie with his third goal of the game with 1:45 to play in the third quarter. After Towson's Kyle Campbell and Duke's Chris Hartofilis exchanged goals early in the fourth, TU's Myers and Obloj scored to increase the Tiger lead to 12-9 with 2:14 remaining. Duke's Terrence Keaney cut the deficit to 12-10 with 1:22 to play, but the Blue Devils could not get any closer.

Tankersley, Obloj and Myers each scored three goals for Towson, while Brad Reppert had a goal and two assists. Duke junior attackman Alex Lieske led the Duke team with four goals and Hartofilis added three.

Towson jumped out to a 4-1 lead, but Lieske scored three goals in a 5-2 run which tied the game at 6-6 with 9:33 left in the second quarter on a goal by Keaney. After Towson led 8-6 at intermission, Duke scored the first two goals of the third period to knot the contest at 8-8 when Lieske tallied his fourth goal of the day.

Senior netminder John Horrigan made 16 saves in the Tiger net while Duke's Matt Breslin was credited with 13 saves.
