Maryland Wins 2005 ACC Men's Lacrosse Title

BALTIMORE, MD - The Maryland Terrapins successfully defended their ACC title by defeating Duke, 9-5, Sunday afternoon in front of 5,681 fans at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore. The Terps were led by Joe Walters' four points on three goals and one assist. Harry Alford made 15 saves on the day as the Terps captured their third ACC Tournament title. Will Dalton won 7-of-10 face-offs as the Terps dominated the action from the second quarter on. Matt Danowski added three assists and one goal to help pace the Blue Devils offensively. Aaron Fenton contributed 12 saves for Duke. Duke took an early 1-0 lead just 1:11 into the game as Matt Danowski connected on a pass to Kyle Dowd on an extra-man opportunity. Danowski notched his second assist five minutes later as he worked to his right and drew a pair of defenders and then tossed a pass back to the middle of the field where Dan Flannery fired a shot past Harry Alford for a 2-0 lead. James Burrell got the Terps on the board after controlling a bounce pass from Joe Walters and firing past the Blue Devil keeper. Duke controlled the majority of the rest of the first quarter holding an 11-6 advantage in shots, with a one-goal lead. Walters tied the game at 2-2 at the 11:09 mark in the second quarter after taking a pass from Xander Ritz on the left side. Walters' shot took a bounce in front of the crease and went in on the far post. Walters put the Terps up just over a minute later after Xander Ritz forced a Duke turnover deep in the offensive zone. Walters scooped up the ground ball and beat Aaron Fenton for the 3-2 Maryland advantage. The two defenses clamped down for the rest of the period not allowing any clear looks at goal and the Terps took the one-goal lead into the locker room. Andrew Schwartzman put the Terps up 4-2 after seven minutes of scoreless action in the third quarter after he worked on the left side of the cage, got inside his defender and beat the keeper. After Duke was called for too many men on the field, the Terps capitalized on their first man-up opportunity when Xander Ritz worked behind the cage and found Bill McGlone alone in front of the net to push the Maryland advantage to 5-2 at the 3:02 mark. The Terps again converted on a man-up opportunity as Ian Healy scooped up a loose ball in front of the cage and fired the shot past Fenton. The Blue Devils got their first goal in just over 40 minutes when Matt Danowski gathered a rebound and shot it behind his back past Alford for the score with 13:04 left in the fourth quarter. Maryland recaptured a four-goal lead again after Steve Wittenberg picked off a Duke pass in the offensive zone and raced down the field. His pass was deflected but picked up by Maxwell Ritz who got the shot past the Duke goalie who had come out to try and get to the loose ball. Ritz would add another score to make it 9-3 before the Blue Devils tacked on a pair of late scores from Peter Lamade and Dan Flannery for the 9-5 final. 2005 ACC All-Tournament Team
