No. 13 Tar Heels Bounce Back Into Win Column On Senior Day

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Thirteenth-ranked North Carolina celebrated a successful Senior Day at Kenan Stadium as the Tar Heels bolted to an early five-goal advantage and went on to defeat No. 20 Hofstra 13-9 before a crowd of 1,358 sun-drenched fans in collegiate men's lacrosse action. The game was the final regular-season home game for 10 UNC seniors -- defenseman Brian Burke, defenseman Tim Kaiser, goalkeeper Andrew Moss, midfielder Brian Connors, midfielder Jamie DeBole, midfielder Mike Munnelly, midfielder Nick Tintle, midfielder Rob Driscoll, defenseman Tim McCall and midfielder Fletcher Gregory.

Carolina halted a two-match losing streak and improved to 8-4 on the campaign. The Tar Heels are 4-0 in games at Kenan Stadium dating back to the 2002 season.

Shane Walterhoefer dominated the face-off X by winning 20 of 25 draws, the third most face-off wins in a single game in UNC history. His performance came just seven days after he won a school record 23 face-offs in UNC's 14-11 loss to Ohio State last Saturday. Those 23 wins had broken the old school record of 22 set by Todd Oudemool against Towson in 1989.

No. 2 Duke Defeats No. 8 Army, 10-6, At Lacrosse Day of Champions

MANHASSET, N.Y. - Ned Crotty netted three goals on Saturday afternoon as second-ranked Duke defeated eighth-ranked Army, 10-6, at the Lacrosse Day of Champions, an event held to pay homage to former Blue Devil Jimmy Regan.

Regan, an Army Ranger who was killed in Iraq last year, was a high school All-America at Chaminade High School and went on to play at Duke from 1999-2002. Saturday's event will raise funds for Manhasset community athletic facilities and support the dependents of the U.S. Army Rangers.

Duke jumped out to a 1-0 lead as Brad Ross found the net just one minute into the contest. Zack Greer then increased the Blue Devils' advantage to 2-0 on a pass from Matt Danowski as Duke converted on a man-up opportunity, before Danowski found Steve Schoeffel at the 9:22 mark to make the score 3-0.

Crotty netted his first goal of the day with 24 seconds remaining the first period before beginning the second period with another tally to give the Blue Devils a 5-0 advantage.

Phipps Makes 17 Saves For No. 7 Maryland Men's Lacrosse In Win Over Penn

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The only player who could score on Brian Phipps Saturday afternoon at Ludwig Field was Brian Phipps. The sophomore goalie made a career-best 17 saves to lead the No. 7 Maryland men's lacrosse team to a 9-4 win over Penn.

Phipps, the 2007 ACC Freshman of the Year, was spectacular in the cage, stopping everything shot his way from a simple stab to stop a simple shot headed for the top corner to a sensational diving save in the second quarter when he left the crease to go after a loose ball. The only goal Phipps allowed on the day came at the 9:05 mark of the first quarter. Phipps made his fourth save of the game, stopping a shot by Corey Winkoff, but the ball was knocked out of his stick and bounced into the Terrapin goal.

But that was the last time the Quakers would score for the next 51:12. The Terrapin defense was solid all afternoon and while Penn did out-shoot Maryland 43-32 the Terps' "D" held the Quakers to a shooting percentage of less than 10 percent. The defensive effort was spearheaded by senior All-America candidate Joe Cinosky, who set a career-best with six groundballs to go along with two caused turnovers.

Virginia Closes Regular Season with 11-7 Win Over Dartmouth

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Senior Ben Rubeor scored a season-high four goals and Danny Glading notched three to lead Virginia to an 11-7 win over Dartmouth Saturday afternoon in the Cavaliers' final regular season game of the season at Klöckner Stadium.

The moves the Cavaliers to 11-2 this season as they prepare for next weekend's Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament at Klöckner Stadium. Dartmouth stands at 5-7 this spring and has two regular season contests remaining.

"I thought that was a very workmanlike effort and a good win against a team that's coming on. I thought that we played very smartly at the end of the game," said Virginia head coach Dom Starsia. "It was probably as cerebral a win as we've had in some time. I thought defensively we played the whole day. They got a couple of unsettled opportunities and a couple of extra-man (opportunities), but I thought when we were settled in the box, I thought our defense did a nice job."

Dartmouth controlled the tempo during the first 10 minutes and scored twice during that span to take the early lead. Jonathan Livadas opened the scoring with two minutes and 14 seconds elapsed with a nice dodge from the top. Josh Gillam scored nearly six minutes later as the visitors' lead grew to 2-0.
