Cavs Clip UNC in Men's Lacrosse, 17-14

April 10, 1999

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Midfielder Jay Jalbert ended a two-game goal scoring drought with three goals, including two in the fourth quarter, to lead Virginia to a 17-14 win over North Carolina in ACC men's lacrosse action this afternoon at Klckner Stadium.

The game was nip-and-tuck throughout and proved to be a game of scoring runs. Virginia held an 8-5 lead at halftime as eight different players tallied for the Cavaliers in the opening 30 minutes.

But the break proved beneficial to the Tar Heels as they stormed out with four straight goals in the first seven minutes of the second half to take a 9-8 lead. North Carolina's defense was particularly effective in containing the explosive Virginia attack. The Cavaliers tied the score at nine at the 8:25 mark of the third quarter on their first shot of the period on a goal by Tucker Radebaugh. The visitors regained the lead on Chase Martin's fourth goal of the afternoon just over a minute later. Henry Oakey's goal with 30 seconds left in the third period enabled Virginia to tie the score again at 10 heading into the final 15 minutes.

Virginia regained the lead on Hanley Holcomb's extra man goal early in the fourth quarter. The ensuing four minutes saw a flurry of scoring as North Carolina rallied to tie the score twice. Radebaugh's third goal of the afternoon on a roll dodge that lost his defender at 5:31 of the fourth quarter proved to be the winner for UVa. Drew McKnight tallied a short time later to give the Cavaliers a little cushion, but Justin Bowman brought the Tar Heels to within one at 15-14 with 5:15 remaining. Jalbert's second goal of the quarter came on a falling down crank shot that got past goalie Jarron Harkness as Carolina seemed to be regaining the momentum to make a final run. Virginia controlled the ball the rest of the way, adding a final goal with 2:16 to play.

"I haven't been shooting the ball well lately, but today they were falling," said Jalbert. "If I don't shoot the ball well, I just do the other things like getting ground balls. The ball just happened to go in today. Like they say, 'There's no 'I' in team.' We get different scoring from different people every week which is the definition of a good team."

The win improves the Cavaliers' record to 6-2 overall and 2-0 in the ACC. North Carolina falls to 5-5 overall and 0-2 in the ACC. Virginia travels to Durham, N.C., next Sunday for a 2 p.m. meeting against second-ranked Duke.
