Hopkins Hands Hoos Tough 16-15 Loss
March 27, 1999 BALTIMORE, Md. - Dylan Schlott, Matt O'Kelly and Conor Denihan combined for 14 goals to lead Johns Hopkins to a 16-15 win over visiting Virginia today at Homewood Field in Baltimore. The loss snapped Virginia's four-game winning streak as the Cavalier fall to 4-2 this season. The third-ranked Blue Jays improved to 3-1 with the win. The two teams battled through two lead changes and eight ties, before O'Kelly and Dan Denihan tallied back-to-back goals midway through the fourth quarter to give the Blue Jays a 16-14 lead with 5:48 to play. Virginia attackman Tucker Radebaugh scored his fifth goal of the game with 34 seconds remaining to pull Virginia within one at 16-15. After Hopkins' Eric Wedin won the ensuing faceoff, Virginia got the ball back after an illegal stick against Hopkins, setting the stage for one final Cavalier opportunity with 21 seconds remaining. The Cavaliers worked the ball around for nearly 15 seconds looking for a shot, only to have Brandon Testa stick-check the ball away from Drew McKnight with time expiring as the ball rolled loose. The Blue Jays jumped to an early 3-1 lead on a goal by Conor Denihan and two by Schlott. But the Cavaliers struck back quickly, scoring six of the next seven goals to take a 7-4 lead. Radebaugh scored twice during the run, which also included goals by Conor Gill, Aaron Vercollone, Hanley Holcomb and David Baruch. Holcomb's goal was the first one for Virginia during the run, but proved costly as he was called for an unsportsmanlike penalty. O'Kelly made the Cavaliers pay for the penalty with an extra-man goal just 22 seconds in the man advantage. The goal ignited a three-goal run for Hopkins before the half as Schlott and Conor Denihan tallied to tie the game at seven at intermission. Radebaugh scored two goals during a 4-2 Virginia surge to open the third minute, but Hopkins tied the game at 11 on back-to-back goals by Conor Denihan and Schlott less than a minute apart late in the third quarter and neither team would have more than a one-goal advantage before O'Kelly and Dan Denihan's goals midway through the fourth quarter gave JHU the 16-14 lead it wouldn't relinquish. Radebaugh tied his career high with his second five-goal game in a row. He also scored five goals in UVa's 21-0 win over Ohio State on Tuesday. In addition, Virginia got two goals and two assists from Gill and two goals from Baruch. The Cavaliers return to action a week from today at home against Maryland. The game is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
