Duke Men's Lacrosse Beats UMBC, 12-9
March 17, 1999 BALTIMORE, Md. - Attackman T.J. Durnan (3g, 1a) and Greg Patchak (1g, 3a) combind for four goals and four assists while midfielders Adam Dretler and John ODonnell scored two goals apiece in a 12-9 Duke victory over Maryland - Baltimore County on Wednesday. Duke held the Retrievers scoreless for the first 36:42 of the game, taking a 5-0 halftime lead and extended it to 6-0 on an ODonnell score 5:03 into the third. UMBC got on the board with an unassisted goal at the 6:42 mark of the third quarter, but Duke answered with goals by Craig Schubert and Jared Frood to lead 8-1 after 45 minutes. The fourth quarter featured 10 goals, as UMBC made a late rally, scoring three times in the final 2:20. The Blue Devils answered with four goals of their own to seal the victory. Duke goalkeeper Matt Breslin tallied 11 saves while allowing just five goals. The Blue Devil defense held the Retrievers to just one goal in five extra-man opportunities. The Blue Devils are off to their best start since the 1951 season, when
they started off 6-0. Duke retunrs to action at home on Sunday, hosting
Navy in a 1:00 p.m. matchup.
