Blue Devils Race Past Crusaders, 16-7

Duke University junior Max Quinzani registered a season-high six goals to lead the Blue Devils to a 16-7 win over visiting Holy Cross in non-conference men’s lacrosse action this afternoon. The Blue Devils had 10 different players score at least one point, with five posting multiple point efforts.

Duke (3-2, 0-1 ACC) stopped its two-game skid with the victory, while the 16 goals are the most for the Blue Devils this season. Holy Cross falls to 0-3 on the year. Duke’s Tucker Virtue and Stephen Coyle tallied their first career goals for the Blue Devils in the win.

Senior Ned Crotty added two goals and four assists for six points, while classmate Mike Catalino matched his career highs with two scores and three points overall. Payton was outstanding at the X, winning a career-best 17-of-20 restarts and picking up 12 ground balls.

The Blue Devils controlled the pace of the game throughout the 60 minutes, outshooting the Crusaders 62-28 for the game, including 21-6 in the first quarter.

UNC Men's Lacrosse Team Off To Best Start Since 2002

In a game filled with firsts and career highs, the third-ranked North Carolina men's lacrosse team defeated first-year varsity program Detroit Mercy 19-4 Tuesday afternoon in a game that was moved to the Henry Stadium turf after a Monday snowstorm in Chapel Hill. It was the first game against a Top 5-ranked team for the Titans while UNC starts the season 6-0 for the first time since 2002.

Junior attackman Joe Howard and senior attackman Matthias McCall each had a career-high four points in the game while junior midfielder Tommy D'Alessandro, freshman midfielder Chris Layne and freshman midfielder Logan Corey all had their first career points. Howard led the Tar Heels with a career-high three goals while McCall, junior attackman Gavin Petracca, senior attackman Bart Wagner, junior midfielder Cryder DiPietro and freshman midfielder Jimmy Dunster all had two goals. Junior midfielder Sean Burke, McCall, Petracca, Corey and junior attackman Kevin Federico all had two assists for Coach Joe Breschi's squad.

Also seeing his first career action was sophomore goalkeeper Jamie Locke who played the last 18:52 of the match and made six saves while allowing only two goals, one of them when the Tar Heels were a man-down. Senior Grant Zimmerman started in goal and made seven saves while allowing only two goals in 41:08.

Cavaliers Defeat VMI 19-3

Top-ranked Virginia scored the first six goals of the game and rolled to a 19-3 win over VMI this afternoon in Lexington, Va. The win is the Cavaliers’ sixth in a row this season, while VMI falls to 1-4 after losing for the second game in a row.

Danny Glading paced the Cavalier offense with a career-high tying five goals and four assists. Rookie Steele Stanwick notched four goals, while Gavin Gill scored twice and added three assists. Virginia’s attack turned in an impressive performance by scoring a combined 17 goals and adding nine assists.

The Cavaliers had huge advantages in shots (52-15), ground balls (45-21) and faceoffs (19-6) as head coach Dom Starsia played every available player.

Glading had a hand in the first six goals, scoring three and assisting on three, in the first 10 minutes of action.
