Feb. 28, 2009
No. 7 Terps Topple No. 12 Duke, 11-8, in Huge ACC Showdown His stats don't jump off of the stat-sheet, but Jeff Reynolds sparked the No. 7 Maryland men's lacrosse team to an 11-8 victory over No. 12 Duke in front of 17,119 fans at the Konica Minolta Face-Off Classic at M&T Bank Stadium Saturday. Reynolds, a native of Bel Air, Md., scored a goal and an assist in the Terps' win, but it was his work at the face-off X that turned the tide for Maryland. The Terps raced out to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter on goals by seniors Dan Groot and Jeremy Sieverts and junior Will Yeatman, but the Blue Devils answered right back with three scores of their own, two by Max Quinzani, to knot the game at 3-3 with 2:06 remaining in the second quarter. That's when Reynolds took over the game. The senior midfielder won the ensuing draw against Duke's face-off specialist Sam Payton, pushed the ball up the field and found sophomore Grant Catalino on the right wing. Catalino, who finished with a game-high six points, quickly moved the ball to sophomore Ryan Young at the right goal line-extended, where he beat Blue Devil goalie Ron Schroeder to give Maryland the 4-3 lead just seven seconds after Duke tied the game.
Tar Heels Remain Unbeaten With Win Over Lehigh North Carolina's men's lacrosse team improved to 5-0 on the season with a 14-6 victory over Lehigh at St. Paul's High School in Baltimore. Senior attackman Bart Wagner and junior midfielder Sean Delaney led the Tar Heels with four goals each. Wagner also had three assists in the game and finished with seven points, exceeding his career high of six established against Marist on March 18, 2008. The Tar Heels outshot the Mountain Hawks 56-24 and had a 51-28 edge in ground balls as Lehigh fell to 0-3 on the season. UNC also won 14 of 23 face-offs with all 14 face-off wins coming from Shane Walterhoefer. UNC's balanced scoring attack included four goals each by Wagner and Delaney who also had his career high for goals scored with his previous high being three. Billy Bitter added two goals for UNC while Gavin Petracca, Thomas Wood, Sean Burke and Chris Hunt each had one.
