U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship Run For Wolfpack Golfers Comes To An End
July 18, 2002 Washington, Mich. - On a great Thursday across the globe for NC State's Men's Golf program, Justin Walters and Fernando Mechereffe finally succumbed to defeat in Thursday evening play at the 2002 U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship. Walters lost 7 and 5 to Casey Lubahn and Mechereffe fell 6 and 5 to Eric Jorgensen. Both Jorgensen and Lubahn are Michigan natives as they defeated the Wolfpack duo to advance to the quarterfinals of match play. Walters, a rising senior All-American, and Mechereffe, a junior standout, both play tremendously all week. Walters fired rounds of 72 and 69 in stroke competition and won two match play events. Mechereffe carded a pair of 72's during stroke play and grabbed two match play victories themselves.
Congratulations to both Walters and Mechereffe as they joined Ex-Wolfpack golfers Carl Pettersson and Tim Clark in the spotlight in the world of golf on Thursday. Pettersson carded a 67 at the British Open to grab a share of the lead. He lead outright before a bogey on 18 created a three-way tie for first. Clark fired a one-under-par 70 and is tied with Tiger Woods after the first round. Check gopack.com for more features on Carl Pettersson and Tim Clark as they shoot for the British Open Championship.
