Men's Golf At 2002 U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship

Washington, Mich. - Current Wolfpack Men's golfer's Justin Walters and Fernando Mechereffe are competing in the 2001 U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship. Incoming freshman golfer Andrew Lewis is also competing after earning a spot at the amateur event partly for his play in qualifying where he defeated the All-American Walters. Walters moved up the leaderboard into a tie for 23rd after a three-under-par 69 improved his two day total to 142. Walters will compete in match play tomorrow after advancing as one of the top 64 players at the amateur event. Mechereffe continued his steady play with his second straight even-par 72. Mechereffe finished the second day of stroke competition tied for 42nd, and will advance to match play competition as well. Andrew Smith also made strides in his play on Tuesday by firing and even-par 72 to complement his eight-over-par round of 80 on Monday. Lewis, from Winston-Salem, NC, was one of the top 150 players at the amateur event but failed to make the cut for match play. Match play begins tomorrow.
