Wolfpack Golfers Participate In 2002 U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship

2002 US Amateur Public Links Championship LIVE SCORING

Washington, Mich. - Justin Walters and Fernando Mechereffe are among 156 players with amateur status participating in the 2002 U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship. Mechereffe fired an even-par 72 at the 7,001 yard Orchards Golf Club in Washington, Michigan to grab an early share of 17th place. Walters was close behind after carding a one-over-par 73 in the first day of stroke play and is tied at 29th.

Mechereffe is a rising junior for the Wolfpack after his first season for NC State. His stroke average of 73.8 on the season was tied for fourth best on the team. Mechereffe recorded three top-20 finishes including two top-10s.

Walters, a 2002 PING All-American, finished his junior year at NC State with a tied for sixth finish at the 2002 NCAA Championship. He competed in the Palmer Cup last week for the Great Britain/Ireland team against the United States team. Walters stroke average of 71.9 in 2001-2002 is the third best stroke average in Wolfpack history for a single season.

Andrew Lewis, an incoming freshman from Winston-Salem, NC, fired an 80 to place tied for 69th.

Second round stroke play begins tomorrow at 7:00am. Walters tees off at 11:39am EST while Mechereffe hits the links at 12:51pm EST.
