Banks Wood, a rising senior on the NC State men's golf team, won the Carolinas Amateur Sunday in Pinehurst, N.C. The Charlotte, N.C. native defeated John Kelley from Winston-Salem, N.C., in the final match play by a 5 and 3 margin.

Wood never trailed in any match by the seventh hole. Against Kelley, Wood was three up after nine holes, three up after 18 holes and five up after 27. He never trailed in the match and was never less than two up after the sixth hole.

Two-under-par in the morning round on the 6,900-yard Dogwood Course at the Country Club of North Carolina, Wood was two-under-par again in the afternoon.

"I am so excited about putting my name on this trophy," Wood said. "With name like Harvie Ward on it, I am honored."

This is the second match play championship for Wood, as he captured the 2000 North Carolina Junior Championship as well.
