Fayetteville Observer Story on North and South Qualifying

Pinehurst--It's not often that Pinehurst Country Club's famed No. 2 Course is brought to its knees, but on Monday, David Sanchez managed to pull off the rare feat. In first round qualifying for the prestigious North and South Amateur Championship, the former Wolfpack golfer fired a sizzling 6-under par 65 on the Donald Ross masterpiece.

Entering Tuesday's final round of qualifying at Pinehurst No. 8, Sanchez holds a two-stroke lead over Nico Bollini of Yorba Linda, California.

"I really wasn't trying to shoot anything mega-low," Sanchez told the Fayetteville Observer. "I just tried to play it solid and not make too many big mistakes."

In carding the low round of the day, Sanchez posted eight birdies and two bogeys.

A year ago, Sanchez reached the quarterfinals before being ousted by Georgia Tech Bryce Molder, who was the nation's top-ranked amateur at the time.
