Duval Tied For Fifth Entering Final Round of U.S. Open
June 19, 1999 By TheACC.com Staff PINEHURST, N.C. - Georgia Tech alumnus David Duval remains in the hunt for the 1999 U.S. Open title, as he enters the final round in a tie for fifth place at 2-over par, three shots behind leader Payne Stewart. Stewart is the only player under par after three rounds, as the par-70, 7,175-yard Pinehurt No. 2 course continues to grow tougher. The soft greens and low scores of Thursday's opening round have given way to swirling winds and increasigly difficult approach shots.
Duval is tied at 2-over with Steve Stricker and Vijay Singh. Stricker shot 69 on Saturday, the only round of the day under par. Meanwhile, Phil Mickelson is in second place at even par, while Tiger Woods and Tim Herron are tied for third at 1-over. In other ACC results, local favorite Davis Love III, who learned the game from his father at Pinehurst, is tied for 14th at 7-over, one shot ahead of fellow Tar Heel Tom Scherrer. Both men carded rounds of 74 on Saturday. Wake Forest alumnus Jay Haas and Florida State's Paul Azinger are tied for 25th at 9-over after rounds of 73 and 75, respectively.
Georgia Tech's Stewart Cink and Larry Mize both struggled Saturday. Cink slipped to 57th at 14-over after a round of 78, while Mize ballooned to 18-over after posting an 84.
