FAIRLEE, Vermont -- Former Wake Forest standout Brent Wanner of Chatham, Mass., drained a 10-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole to win the Vermont Open championship at Lake Morey Resort by one stroke Wednesday.

Wanner carded a 5-under-par 65 and finished the three-round event at 11-under 199. He earned $9,000 for his first professional victory.

At Wake Forest, Wanner was a Freshman All-American in 2000 and honorable mention All-American in 2003. He is one of just five players in Wake Forest history to be named All-ACC four times.

John Elliott, a former PGA Tour pro from Connecticut who plays out of Mount Snow Country Club, finished second after a 68 Wednesday. New Jersey's David Schuster matched Wanner's 65 to finish third, two strokes off the pace.

Trevor Murphy of St. Johnsbury posted a 211 total. The UNC Charlotte junior was the low amateur and top Vermont finisher.
