Driscoll Makes Cut For NCAA Individual Golf Championship
June 1, 2000 Virginia senior James Driscoll shot a one-under par 71 in the second round of the NCAA Golf Championship at the Grand National Golf Club today and made the cut to compete for the individual title. Virginia shot 290 today to give the Cavaliers a two-day total of 589 (+13) to finish in a tie for 25th place with Arizona State. The top 15 teams on the leaderboard advance to the final two rounds. Driscoll finished the second day of competition in a three-way tie for ninth place with a total of 139 (-5). He was six strokes behind Charles Howell of Oklahoma State and David Gosset of Texas who were tied for the lead at 133 (-11). Driscoll has competed in the NCAA Tournament three previous years, but this is the first time he made the cut to play in the final two rounds. Lewis Chitengwa was Virginia's last individual to compete for the NCAA individual title. Chitengwa finished seventh in 1996 and tied for 36th in 1998.
Oklahoma State took a one-stroke lead over Texas to lead the tournament field with 557 (-19). Texas, who was the first round leader, was in second with 558 (-18) while Georgia Tech was in third place with 562 (-14).
