Maryland Men's Golf Competes at Wofford Invitational
April 20, 1999 COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The twenty-fifth ranked Maryland men's golf team travels to Carolina Country Club in Spartanburg, S.C., this week for the Wofford College Invitational. It is the first of two remaining regular season tournaments prior to NCAA Regionals which tee off May 20-22. Maryland finished sixth at last weeks Atlantic Coast Conference Championships hosted at Old North State Club in Badin Lake, N.C. The Terps were without standout junior Keith Unikel (Potomac, Md.) at last weeks ACC event, however, and will hope to get him back into the lineup, and regroup, in two tournaments prior to regional qualification. Next week, the Terps participate in the Furman Intercollegiate at the Furman University Golf Course.
TERPS SIXTH AT ACCs - RIVERA SMOKES FIELD IN FINAL TWO ROUNDS Miguel Rivera (Bel Air, Md.) played his best golf of the year during the final two days of the ACC Championships to record the second-best combined score of the tourneys final 36 holes. Rivera shot 71 and 70 during his final two rounds to help lift Maryland from an eighth-place standing after 18 holes to its final position in sixth place. Maryland was without nationally-ranked junior Keith Unikel whose injured shoulder forced him to withdraw from the tournament on Friday morning. Riveras 141 in the final 36 holes reflected his two best rounds of the season, and was second only to Dukes Matt Krauss whose seven-under 137 helped clinch the ACCs individual title. Rivera shot 78 in his opening round, and finished 10th overall.
TEAM RANKINGS Maryland was ranked 25th by Golfstat last week, 29th in the MasterCard CGF Rankings and 35th in the Golfweek/Sagarin ratings.
