Tech 2nd, UNC 3rd Heading Into Final Round of Duke Classic

DURHAM, N.C. - After 36 holes under sunny skies and warm temperatures, Northwestern leads the 15-team field at the Duke Golf Classic, held at the Duke Golf Course. The Wildcats are currently at even par after firing two rounds of 288 on Sunday. Georgia Tech is in second place, five strokes back, while North Carolina is third with a six-over par.

Individually, David Christensen of East Tennessee State leads the field with a three-under 141 for two rounds. Daniel DeBra of Furman is in second, one stroke back of the leader, while five players are tied for third place with a 143. Steve Marino of Virginia carded the low round of the day with a 68 in the second round.

The Yellow Jackets were led by redshirt-sophomore Wes Latimer (Woodstock, Ga.), who fired a 71-73--150=144 (Even par) to place in a tie for eighth. He was followed by sophomore Bryce Molder (Conway, Ark.) who shot a 76-70--150=146 and junior Carlton Forrester (Gainesville, Ga.) who carded a 75-71--150=146 as both finished in a tie for 14th. Freshman Kris Mikkelsen (Woodstock, Ga.) shot a 75-72--150=147 to end tied for 22nd and freshman Matt Weibring (Plano, Texas) shot a 74-75--150=149 to place in a tie for 36. Junior Matt Kuchar did not make the trip for a second week in a row to rest a strained back.

The host Blue Devils struggled on Sunday, shooting a 302 and 298, which puts them in 13th place heading into the final round. Senior Kyle Elfers, tied for 22nd place, leads the Duke contingent, with rounds of 76 and 71 for a three-over par 147.

The final round of the Duke Golf Classic takes place on Monday, with tee times starting at 8:00 a.m. The awards ceremony will take place at approximately 2:30 p.m.
