Terps Triumph at Palmetto Intercollegiate

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. - The University of Maryland men's golf team shot a 10-over par 874 to capture the team title at the Palmetto Intercollegiate Golf Classic at the Osprey Point Golf Classic. The Terps' final score of 874 bested the Univ. of North Florida by one stroke and South Carolina by two strokes.

The Terps continue to excel this season as this marks the second time in as many meets that the Terps have placed in first or second. In the first meet of the season, the G. Gunby Jordan Intercollegiate, Maryland finished in second-place with a two-over par score of 866.

Individually, the Terps placed two golfers in the top-twenty as both junior Keith Unikel (Potomac, Md.) and senior Ed Flowerdew (Falmouth, Me.) finished in 13th-place with a score of three-over par. Unikel, who came into the third round in a tie for third place, shot a 78 to accompany his first and second round scores of 70 and 71. This marked the first time in five rounds that he has not shot under par.

Flowerdew recorded round scores of 74, 71, and 74 and continued to perform well for the Terps. Also contributing was junior Gary Mankulish (Laurel, Md.) who finished with three others in a tie for 24th-place after shooting a five-over 221. The individual champion was Chris Speight of the Univ. of Arkansas, who shot a tournament low round score of 67 in the first round and added second and third round scores of 70 and 71 to finish at eight-under par.

Maryland next competes in the Keswick Caval Classic held in Charlottesville, Va. on September 18 - September 20.
