Scores Rise, But Duval Remains Tied for U.S. Open Lead

June 18, 1999

PINEHURST, N.C. (AP) - Swirling wind and slick greens even took their toll on David Duval on Friday as Pinehurst No. 2 stiffened to the challenge in the second day of the U.S. Open, but the Georgia Tech alumnus finished his round in a tie atop the leaderboard.

Duval, who hadn't made a bogey all tournament, took a double bogey on the sixth hole and later made two more bogeys. But he had plenty of company on a day when less than a dozen players were under par.

Duval finished with an even-par 70 for a share of the clunhouse lead with Phil Mickelson and Payne Stewart at 3-under 137.

Duval, continuing the seemingly effortless play that gave him a share of the lead with an opening-round 67, birdied the second hole and then ran in a long birdie putt on No. 5 for a rare three on the 439-meter (482-yard) hole.

But on a day when wind dried the greens and most of the field struggled to make par, Duval's streak of 23 holes without worse than a par came to an end when he knocked the ball into a greenside bunker and then hit it over the green on No. 6.

Mickelson shot a 70, while Payne Stewart, last year's leader for three rounds, added a second-round 69 to his opening 68.

"It's not very easy out there," Stewart said. "They have some real cute pins."
