Clemson and UNC Within Striking Distance at NCAA Golf Tourney
CHASKA, Minn. - Clemson is tied for fourth place and North Carolina is tied for sixth heading into Saturday's final round of the 1999 NCAA Men's Golf Championships.
The Tigers, who led after 36 holes, were 15-over par (303) on Friday, raising their tournament total to 29-over (893). UNC shot 10-over (298) on Friday and currently stands at 35-over (899) for the tournament.
Oklahoma State regained the team lead by carding a 285 (three-under), the first round below par in the entire tournament and an improvement of 23 strokes over their Thursday total. The Cowboys are currently at 18-over (882), five shots ahead of Georgia (887).
UNC's Max Hill carded a 72 on Friday and is in third place individually at one-over par (217), four shots behind Northwestern's Luke Donald.
Clemson is led by Jonathan Byrd and Lucas Glover, who are tied for sixth-place individually at three-over par (219) after shooting 73 and 74 on Friday, respectively.
Clemson's Jani Saari shot 77 on Friday and is tied for 27th at nine-over; John Engler is 63rd at 16-over after his round of 79; and Michael Hoey is tied for 75th at 23-over after carding an 80.
For the Tar Heels, Don Hill shot 77 on Friday and is tied for 14th at seven-over. Brad Hyler notched a 73 on Friday and is tied for 40th at 11-over; Paul Daniel is tied for 75th at 23-over after his round of 76; and Rob Simmons is tied for 79th at 26-over after carding an 80.
Duke freshman Matt Krauss shot 73 on Friday and is tied for 14th at seven-over. Krauss is competing individually as one of the top-nine players from the 15 teams who did not make the cut after 36 holes.
The 1999 NCAA Championships are being held at the par 72, 7,196-yard
