Opelika, Ala. -- The North Carolina Tar Heels fired a 10-under par 278 on Friday, but fell from fourth to fifth place after three rounds of the NCAA Championship.

Carolina is 16 strokes behind leader Oklahoma State. The Cowboys, paced by Charles Howell's 9-under par 63, were 13 under par on the day and are now 32 under for the tournament. The Cowboys are three strokes ahead of the Texas Longhorns, who fired an 11-under 277 for the day.

Georgia Tech is in third place, while Arizona, which tied the one-round tournament record with a 19-under 269 total, is in fourth place. Arizona's Scott Moore shot a 66, with teammate Derek Gillespie adding a 67. The Wildcats other three players, Reid Hadley, Cody Beyer and Ricky Barnes, all shot four-under 68s.

Two Tar Heels are in the top ten individually. Brad Hyler is tied for seventh with an 8-under 208 total, while Max Harris' third-round 66 moved him into a tie for tenth at 209.

UNC's Paul Daniel and Rob Simmons both had rounds of even par 72 on Friday. Daniel's three-day total is a one-under par 215, while Simmons is even par at 216.

Whitten Maeres' 79 on Friday did not count in the team total. Maeres has a three-round total of 234.

The four-round tournament will conclude on Saturday.
