Duke Tied For 10th Following Opening Round of NCAA Championship Senior Clark Klaasen fired a one-over 72 on Tuesday to lead Duke into a 10th place tie with a 13-over 297 after the opening round of the NCAA Championship. Junior Adam Long and senior Michael Quagliano each shot two-over 73s to help pace the Blue Devil attack at Inverness Club (par 71, 7,255 yards) in Toledo, Ohio. Klaasen continued his strong play over the final two months of the season with a one-over 72. He opened the day par-par before carding his first birdie of the day on the par 3 third hole. After a bogey on No. 4, the Grand Rapids, Mich., native sank an eight-foot putt for birdie No. 5 to move back to one-under. Klaasen hit a rough patch in the middle of the round with bogeys on No. 7, No. 10 and No. 13 to fall to two-over par. He rebounded to play the final five holes at one-under par with a birdie on the par 4 16th hole. Klaasen is tied for 16h overall, three shots off the opening round leaders. Georgia Tech Tied for 18th After First Round of NCAA Championship Chesson Hadley shot a 1-over-par 72 Tuesday to pace Georgia Tech, while the Yellow Jackets posted a 17-over-par total of 301 and stand in a tie for 18th place after the first round of the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship. Tech, 10th-seeded in the championship and ranked No. 8 in the nation, is tied with Iowa and Southern California, 13 strokes off the lead of top-seed Oklahoma State and No. 6-seeded Georgia, each of whom covered the 7,255-yard, par 71 Inverness Club in 288 (+4). Freshman Lead The Way On Day One Of NCAA Men's Golf Championships Freshman Daniel Meggs went 1-under par on his second nine holes to finish with a round of 2-over 73 and lead the Wake Forest men's golf team to a round of 302 on a soggy first day of the 2009 NCAA Men's Golf Championships at the Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio. Fellow freshman Lee Bedford made a pair of birdies in his round of 4-over 75 while senior Dustin Groves and juniors Brendan Gielow and Travis Wadkins all posted rounds of 77. The Demon Deacons opened the round under threatening skies and by the second hole, it began to rain. The light rain stayed in the area for most of the first nine but resided on the back nine. Virginia Opens NCAA Play in 25th Place The Virginia men’s golf team had to battle through wet and windy conditions during the opening round of play at the 112th NCAA Championships taking place at Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio. Playing in the morning wave, the 22nd-seeded Cavaliers shot 22-over 306 to tie for 25th after the first day of competition. Virginia, and the other 12 teams playing in the morning wave, had to content with a steady rain for about half of the round in addition to the windy conditions that hampered the entire field all day. Starting on the first tee, the Cavaliers finished their first four holes at even par. The end of the front nine was another story. As the rain picked up, UVa’s four scoring players shot 11-over the final four holes.
