Maryland's Rivera Wins Furman Intercollegiate Title
May 2, 1999 GREENVILLE, S.C. - Senior Miguel Rivera (Bel Air, Md.) took the individual title after a five-hole playoff on Sunday to lead the Maryland golf team to a third-place finish at the Furman Intercollegiate, hosted at the Furman University Golf Course. Rivera and Mississippi State's Richard Barbles both finished the day with a third round 71 after finishing round two in a first place tie. Both posted a final score of 213 (-3). After shooting a second round low of 68 yesterday, junior Keith Unikel (Potomac, Md.) dropped from a third-place tie into a tie for 13th by shooting 76 in round three. Maryland (882, +18), ranked 32nd in last week's Golfstat national rankings, finished round one in second place before jumping into first after the second round. Junior Gary Mankulish (Laurel, Md.) and senior Mike Deo (Milford, N.J.) both shot a 78 in round three and senior Pete Coughlin (Berwick, Pa.) shot a 76 to guide Maryland to the third-place finish. The Terps ended up behind first-place Mississippi State (878, +14) and second-place UNC Charlotte (879, +15). Coastal Carolina (883, +19) finished in fourth, while host Furman (884, +20) placed fifth. The tournament was the Terps' final of the regular season. The team is bidding to maintain their status among the top eight teams in the East Region and qualify for the NCAA East Regionals.
