SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Wake Forest senior Michael Capone fired a 69 in the final round of play to capture individual medalist honors at the Wofford Invitational tournament, held at the 6,765-yard, par-72 course at the Carolina Country Club. The win marked the first individual tournament title of Capone's career, and was the first title won by a Demon Deacon since 1996.

After shooting back-to-back rounds of 68 on Friday, Capone stood tied with Charleston's Jedd McLuen for the lead heading into the final round of play. McLeun took a one-stroke lead over Capone after 15 holes of play, but Capone birdied 16 while McLeun bogeyed the hole, giving Capone the one-stroke edge. Both players took a par on 17, and Capone birdied the 18th hole to seal the two-stroke win. Capone's tournament total of 205, or 11-under par, topped his previous career-best 54-hole score by seven strokes.

McLeun tied with Virginia's Mike Mitchell, who shot a final round of 68, for second place individually at 9-under.

As a team, Wake Forest carded a final round of 301 to finish in ninth place at 20-over par. The Deacons were 22 strokes behind the team champion, Virginia, who finished the event at 2-under par.

Maryland tied for third at 7-over, while Duke placed fifth at 8-over.

Gary Mankulish finished sixth and Miguel Rivera and Keith Unikel tied for 13th place to pace the Terps.

Mankulish (214, -2) cooled his pace on Saturday with a two-over par 74. He entered the day tied for fifth after firing a pair of 70s in his first two trips around the 6,700-yard track. Rivera (217, +1) was the big player for the Terps on Saturday, shooting a one-under 71 to move up in the standings and catch Unikel in 13th. Unikel (217, +1) was one-over at 73 in his final round.

With a field-low 280 in the third round, the Duke men's golf team moved up five spots in the standings on the final day.

The Blue Devils carded an eight-under par as a team in Saturday's round to finish with a 54-hole total of 872.

Duke senior Marc Chatelain carded a field-low 68 in the final round to finish in fourth place in the indivudual standings. Chatelain, who was tied for 13th heading into Saturday's round, posted a four-under 212 for the 54-hole tournament.

Another Duke senior, Kyle Elfers, posted a top 20 finish as he carded a one-over 217 to tie for 13th place.

Other Demon Deacon finishers included junior Jamie Gallacher, who shot a 74 in the final round to place 35th in the 69-man field at 8-over par. Sophomore Ryan Peiffer and senior Oscar Sanchez both shot 79s and finished 38th and 51st at 9-over and 14-over, respectively. Rounding out the Deacon contingent was senior Craig Inman, playing in his first varsity collegiate event, who placed 69th at 35-over par after recording an 88 today.
