  • NEW LONDON, N.C. - Duke and Florida State each blazed a nine-under-par 279 to share the lead after the first round of the 2008 ACC Men's Golf Championship played at the Old North State Club at Uwharrrie Point. The teams hold a three-stroke lead over third-place North Carolina (282). In all, six teams finished within five strokes of the lead as NC State, Clemson and Wake Forest tied for fourth at 284.

NC State freshman Matt Hill posted a 67 to pace all players. He holds a one-stroke lead over three players: Webb Simpson of Wake Forest, Chase MacFarland of North Carolina and Matthew Savage of Florida State. In all, 20 individuals finished under par.

Three players posted an eagle in the opening round. Boston College's Jan Prokop opened his round with an eagle on the first hole, while Clemson's Phillip Mollica ended his round with an eagle on 18. Wake Forest's Chris McCartin eagled the 11th hole, en route to a 70.

Duke's O.D. Vincent was pleased with his team's round in his first ACC Championship at the Blue Devil helm. "It's a nice start. We expect scores to be close throughout. We want to get off to a better start tomorrow. We did not play the first hole well today, but the guys played well the rest of the day."

Trey Jones also expressed his satisfaction with his Seminoles' performance. "We did exactly what we wanted to do today. This field is deep with a lot of good teams. You are not going to win or separate yourself (in the first round) and we did not put ourselves in a hole. I am proud of the way we played today. We got out to a good start which we haven't done all year, but we have played well down the stretch. This is a good team. If we putt the ball well, we have a chance to win.

Georgia Tech was the seventh team to finish under par (-1) at 287. Virginia Tech was eight at plus-one (289), while Virginia finished ninth at 294. Boston College was 10th (303) and Maryland finished 11th (304).

The 54-hole event continues through Sunday at the Old North State Club which features a par 72, 7,102-yard layout. Tee times begin at 8:30 a.m. each morning and the public is invited to come out and watch some of the best teams in college golf. Saturday and Sunday rounds will also be featured on ACC Select beginning at 1:30 p.m. each day.
