Maryland Men's Golf Team Places Third at Pepsi Intercollegiate
March 20, 1999 CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Maryland was two-under par and five strokes off the lead after 18 holes on Friday, but by the close of business Saturday, the Terps were 12-over and 17 strokes off the pace set by champion Coastal Carolina. Junior Gary Mankulish (214) paced the Terrapins with three consistent rounds of 71, par 72, and 71 in the final round to finish alone in third place at two-under. Keith Unikel (217), who began the tournament in fourth place among the leaders with a two-under par opening round, shot 75 and 72 in final rounds to finish tied in the 10th position at one-over. Coastal Carolina, meanwhile, blistered the 6,976-yard track at Bradford Creek Golf Course by shooting under par twice as a team, and shooting three-over in a second round that was high-scoring throughout the field of 25 teams during the close of play on Friday evening, and into Saturday. The Chantacliers were led by Jacob Wilner's (205) second-place finish, and Brad Hastings (215) a stroke behind Mankulish in fourth. East Carolina's Scott Campbell (203) shot 69-67-67 to finish 13-under par and hold off Wilner, who shot 68-69-68, for medalist honors. Maryland, ranked 26th in the latest MasterCard College Golf Foundation rankings, placed three golfers in the top 20 with senior Mike Deo (220) firing two rounds of par or better. Senior Pete Coughlin (226) and Miguel Rivera (228) completed the Terps' lineup. Last season, Rivera finished 10th at Bradford Creek. The Terps continue their Spring Break tournament schedule by traveling to Aiken, S.C. beginning Monday for the 54-hole Cleveland Golf Collegiate Championships at Palmetto Golf Course.
