No. 12 Virginia Tech Meets No. 20 Florida State in 2010 Dr Pepper ACC Football Championship Game
Virginia Tech becomes the first ACC team to go undefeated in conference play since Florida State in 2000. Virginia Tech is ranked 12th this week by the Associated Press, while Florida State is ranked 20th. With their 10th win of the season Virginia Tech is the only team in the nation which has won 10 or more games in each of the past seven seasons. Boston College has become the first ACC team to record a five-game winning streak after suffering a five-game losing streak in the same season. The Eagles finished the season on a five-game winning streak after dropping five straight contests. Virginia Tech is playing in its fourth ACC Football Championship Game in the six-year history of the event. Nine ACC teams are bowl-eligible including five teams in the ACC’s Atlantic Division in Florida State, Maryland, NC State, Boston College and Clemson and four in the Coastal in Virginia Tech, Miami, North Carolina and Georgia Tech. Florida State head coach Jimbo Fisher is one of only three coaches who have guided their teams to nine or more wins in the first season as a head coach and their first season in the ACC (Maryland’s Ralph Friedgen, former BC coach Jeff Jagodzinski). He is one of only two coaches (BC’s Jagodzinski was the other) to have guided their teams to the ACC title game as a rookie head coach. Florida State, which defeated Virginia Tech in the first ACC title game in 2005, has won or shared 12 ACC titles and a win Saturday would tie the Seminoles with Clemson for most ACC Football Championships won or shared (13). Virginia Tech leads the nation in turnover margin, averaging a plus 1.33 per game. As a team Florida State ranks 2nd nationally in quarterback sacks per game and sophomore DE Brandon Jenkins is tied for 3rd nationally in sacks Clemson’s Da’Quan Bowers leads the nation in QB sacks per game (1.29) and is second in tackles for minus yardage (2.04). Florida State ranks 11th nationally in scoring defense (17.83), while Virginia Tech ranks 13th (17.92). Virginia Tech’s Jayron Hosley leads the nation in pass interceptions per game with 8 in 12 contests (0.73).
