Duke Travels To Meet Wake Forest
The Blue Devils take to the road to play Wake Forest for
the 85th time in a series that dates back to 1889 ... Kickoff
is set for 12 noon at Groves Stadium and the game will be
televised by Jefferson-Pilot Sports ... Steve Martin (playby-
play) and Rick Walker (color) will provide the call
while Mike Hogewood covers the sideline beat ... Duke
stands at 1-6 overall and 0-4 in the ACC after falling to
Virginia, 37-16, last week while Wake Forest is 3-4 overall
and 0-4 in league play following its 20-17 defeat to
Florida State.

Duke senior defensive tackle Orrin Thompson's younger
brother, Jeremy, is a freshman member of the Wake
Forest program ... Duke offensive coordinator Marty
Galbraith spent seven seasons (two stints) on the staff
at Wake Forest (1978-82 & 1989-90) ... Wake Forest
assisant athletic director for football Bill Faircloth served
as an assistant coach at Duke in 1976-77.

1889: On March 29, Wake Forest defeats Duke in the
first meeting between the schools.
1930: Duke and Wake Forest battle to a 13-13 tie as the
Blue Devils go 8-1-2.
1938: Duke blanks Wake Forest, 7-0, in one of nine
regular season shutouts for the "Iron Dukes".
1945: Duke's George Clark rushes 17 times for a
school single-game record 214 yards as the Blue Devils
win, 26-19.
1962: Duke posts its largest win over an ACC opponent
by defeating the Deacons, 50-0.
1963: The Duke defense intercepts a school record six
passes in a 39-7 win.
1981: Duke has three backs -- Mike Grayson (17-
188), Joel Blunk (20-110) and Greg Boone (16-101) --
top the 100-yard barrier in a 31-10 victory.
1988: Duke's Anthony Dilweg throws for 475 yards --
the most ever given up by a Wake Forest defense and
the second highest single-game total in Duke history --
but Wake Forest prevails, 35-16, by taking advantage of
five Blue Devil turnovers.
1995: Wake Forest's Rusty LaRue sets an NCAA
record with 55 pass completions while throwing for 478
yards but Duke wins, 42-36, thanks to a 28-0 halftime
lead.
1999: The Blue Devils score a school record 34 points
in the first quarter and hold on for a 48-35 win ... The
game features 99-yard kickoff returns for touchdowns by
Duke's Scottie Montgomery and Wake Forest's John
Stone.
New Helmets For 2004
Duke is wearing new helmets this season, returning to a
white hat for the first time since the 1993 campaign ... The
new headgear features a black facemask with a royal
blue Iron Duke "D" on each side ... For the past 10
seasons, the Blue Devils have donned blue lids with a
black script "Duke" on each side ... From 1981-93, Duke
sported white helmets with the script "Duke".
Duke's Last Game
Last Saturday in Durham, Virginia's
Alvin Pearman rushed for 223 yards and one touchdown
to lead the 14th-ranked Cavaliers to a 37-16
win over Duke ... The Blue Devils pulled within 23-16
on a Matt Brooks field goal with 14:03 remaining in
the fourth quarter, but Virginia responded with a 70-
yard drive in seven plays for a three-yard scoring run
by Pearman ... Mike Schneider led the Duke offense
with 191 yards and two TDs through the air ... In
Winston-Salem, Florida State defeated Wake Forest,
20-17, on Xavier Beitia's field goal late in the fourth
period ... The Demon Deacons led 14-3 at halftime
after returning both a fumble and an interception for
touchdowns.
