Sept. 1, 2000

DURHAM, N.C. -- Saturday's football season-opener between Duke and East Carolina will honor one of the great Blue Devils of all-time as Sonny Jurgensen Day will be celebrated at Wallace Wade Stadium.

Jurgensen, who lettered in football at Duke from 1954-56 and was a member of two ACC championship teams as well as the 1954 Orange Bowl championship squad, will be honored with a special presentation at halftime of Saturday's game.

An 18-year veteran of the National Football League, Jurgensen was selected to the Pro Bowl five times and led the league in passing yards on three occasions. The former Philadelphia and Washington quarterback finished his professional career with 32,224 passing yards and 255 touchdowns and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1983.

"We wanted Sonny to be a part of the tradition that we are trying to bring back to Duke University," said Duke Director of Athletics Joe Alleva.

Kickoff for the Duke-East Carolina game is 6:00 PM.
