Tech Hires Orsini as Senior Associate AD

July 2, 1999

ATLANTA - Steve Orsini, the Associate Athletic Director and Treasurer since 1994 at the U.S. Naval Academy Athletic Association, has been named Senior Associate Athletic Director at Georgia Tech, Tech Director of Athletics Dave Braine announced Friday.

Orsini, 43, who also spent 10 years in administration with the Dallas Cowboys of the National Football League, replaces Jeff Bourne, who was recently named the Director of Athletics at James Madison University.

"We're very pleased to be getting someone of Steve Orsini's experience in intercollegiate athletics," said Braine. "He has a strong background in the business end of athletics, and yet he also has considerable experience as an intercollegiate student-athlete and administrator. He's a very well-rounded individual.

"He brings us strength in areas where we have a need. We are going to miss Jeff Bourne, who will be awfully hard to replace. But Steve, who's worked for one of the top administrators in college athletics in Jack Lengyel, has the experience and ability to make the transition a smooth one."

A native of Hummelstown, Pa. (outside of Harrisburg, Pa.), Orsini graduated from Notre Dame in 1978, with a degree in Business Administration, majoring in accounting. He was a three-time letter winner at fullback on the Fighting Irish football team and was a one of four team captains on the 1977 national championship squad.

After graduation he spent three years as Senior Assistant Accountant and became a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) at the New York accounting firm of Deloitte, Haskins and Sells.

He began his career in athletics administration in 1981 as Assistant Business Manager and Ticket Manager at Notre Dame and remained in that capacity for three years until leaving to join the Dallas Cowboys as ticket manager in 1984. He became Director of Administration for the Cowboys in 1989, serving in that capacity until 1993 when he went back into private business as the Sales Controller for Fujitsu-ICL Systems, Inc. in Dallas. He resumed his career in athletics administration at Navy in 1994.

During his time at Navy, Orsini was responsible for all business and legal affairs and helped increase the Athletic Association's revenue by 70 percent. Responsible for the development of the department of External Affairs while at Navy, this department set all-time records at the school for season ticket sales, marketing and sponsorship revenues and fan attendance during his tenure.

"I look forward to the opportunity that Dave Braine has given me to continue the success that Georgia Tech athletic program has experienced," said Orsini. "I'm very enthused about joining the administrative team. I've had the great fortune to work under one of the top athletic directors in America in Jack Lengyel, and I'm excited about the opportunity to work with another in Dave Braine. My wife and I feel Georgia Tech and Atlanta will be a great fit for us."

Orsini is married to the former Amy Kertesz of South Bend, Ind., and the couple has one daughter: Angela, 3.
