![]() Duke Completes 2003 Spring Practices with Blue-White Game
April 12, 2003 Duke completed its 2003 spring football drills with its annual Blue-White Game held on Saturday afternoon at Wallace Wade Stadium. There were eight scoring plays in the game, including four touchdowns by the offense (three rushing and one passing) and four by the special teams (two field goals and two touchdowns). Senior wide receiver Reggie Love had an outstanding afternoon, hauling in seven receptions for 128 yards. Defensively, sophomore linebacker Brendan Dewan paced Duke with nine tackles and senior cornerback Temo George registered two interceptions. The game featured nine periods of action and included several possessions starting from various spots on the field, special teams work, goal line simulations, two-minute drills and several game situations to close the 90-minute scrimmage. "We got a lot of good work on different situations and great effort from a lot of guys," said head coach Carl Franks. "It has been fun to watch some of our guys playing as well as they have in their careers and the younger kids play and develop throughout the spring. Now we need to continue to work hard in preparation for next season." The game opened with a 97-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Senterrio Landrum, who also had two catches for 23 yards as a receiver. Duke's talented running back duo of Alex Wade (7 carries-38 yards-1 touchdown) and Chris Douglas (7-22-1) combined for 60 yards on 14 carries and two touchdowns for the Blue Devil offense. Redshirt freshman quarterback Mike Schneider led Duke with 100 yards through the air on 7-of-15 passing. Junior quarterback Adam Smith was 7-of-15 for 86 yards with one interception and one TD, a three-yarder to Love. Junior Chris Wispelwey was 5-of-7 passing for 80 yards and had a one-yard touchdown run in a goal line situation. The offense did spread the ball around as eight different players had rushing statistics, led by Wade's 38 yards, and 10 Blue Devils had at least one reception, led by Love's 128 yards. Duke totaled 368 yards of offense, 287 of which came through the air. In part due to big days from Dewan and George, the defensive unit had two interceptions, one fumble caused, one fumble recovery, five tackles for losses, two quarterback sacks, three quarterback hurries and three pass breakups. Sophomore linebacker DeAndre White was active and had seven tackles for the defense. The second special teams touchdown came on a blocked punt by Derek Bryant that was returned 32 yards by Shaun Noonan. During Saturday's intermission, it was announced that Ryan Fowler, Terrell Smith, Drew Strojny and Wade were named team captains for the 2003 season.
