Head coach Ron Vanderlinden
is excited about the talented
newcomers headed to Maryland.

February 3, 1999

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Twenty high school student-athletes and one transfer have signed national letters of intent to join the University of Maryland football program, announced third-year head coach Ron Vanderlinden this afternoon. Considered the finest recruiting class in College Park since his arrival in December 1997, Vanderlinden acknowledged the contingent as very significant.

"As with every aspect of our program," said Vanderlinden, "our goal is to continue to make improvements and to upgrade. This years recruiting class fulfills that goal, and can only be described as outstanding. We were able to address all of our personnel needs."

Showcased among the class of 21 newcomers is All-America QB Latrez Harrison (Atlanta/Booker T. Washington) whose services have been widely sought. Rated the top QB in Georgia, one of the top five QBs in the Southeast and as high as 14th in the country, Harrison passed for 2,400 yards and 27 touchdowns as a senior. He was the Atlanta public schools player of the year in 1998 and was an honorable mention All-American by USA Today. Vanderlinden also noted the signing of local stars Leroy Ambush (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) and Curome Cox (Arlington, Va./Gonzaga College HS) among the list of top recruits. Ambush was a consensus all-state linebacker in 1997, but was limited to four games as a senior after suffering a dislocated elbow. He led his team to the state 3A title game and an 11-2 record as a junior. He also was his teams leading rusher, but is expected to play defense with the Terrapins. Cox is a two-way player who could play at cornerback or wide receiver at Maryland. The D.C. product and All-Met selection by the Washington Post was instrumental in leading his team to an 11-2 record last fall, and an appearance in the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference title game against DeMatha. Cox averaged 25.8 yards per reception and nearly 21 yards per punt return. On defense, he recorded five interceptions.
