2008 Preview

By Mike Hogewood for theACC.com

At NC State, the buzzword is patience. It's something that's hard for the Wolfpack nation to grasp. Tom O'Brien is now in his second season as head coach and all indications are that this team is going to be better. The big question is "What will the overall record be?"

O'Brien says that "the second year, everyone understands the expectations whether it's on the field, off the field, in the classroom, or in the weight room." The bottom line is that after finishing last in the Atlantic division last year, the team is picked to wind up in the same spot in 2008.

Last Year, NC State was 5-7, 3-5 in the ACC. The highlight of the year was a four-game winning streak in mid-season that began at in-state rival East Carolina. This from a team that finished last in the league in rushing defense and next to last in rushing offense. The team, depleted by injuries, simply ran out of gas and lost its last two. The winning streak did give a glimpse of what O'Brien has in store for the Wolfpack of the future - disciplined, mistake-free football.

Running Back
Jamelle Eugene
This year's offense should be much improved. First, there are three healthy and very talented running backs. Jamelle Eugene is the returning starter, but Andre Brown and Toney Baker are coming off of injuries and both have had great moments wearing the red and white. If all three stay healthy, State will have as deep and as talented a group of rushers as anyone in the conference.

The question mark in Raleigh is the quarterback position. O'Brien was disappointed in that position a year ago. "Anytime you throw 14 touchdown passes and 23 interceptions, that's gotta be reversed." Daniel Evans, the returning starter, played hurt much of last year and is healthy now after off-season surgery. Russell Wilson, a mobile runner with a rocket arm, got most of the snaps under center in the spring and will be given a chance to win the job. There's a talented freshman, Mike Glennon, who also could figure into the quarterback mix if needed.

The big difference in the offense should be at tight end. Anthony Hill returns after missing last season with a knee injury. He's a solid blocker who's great at catching the ball over the middle in traffic. Hill has felt great in summer workouts. "The knee that I hurt, I feel like it's actually stronger than the knee that didn't get hurt." The offensive line has been re-tooled with a couple of players who moved over from defense.

Cornerback
Jeremy Gray
With its improvements on offense, State should be able to put more points on the board this season, and they may need to as there are a number of unknowns on defense. It's not easy to replace linemen like DeMario Pressley and Martrel Brown as well as all three starting linebackers. However, inexperience does not mean a lack of talent. The new starters at linebacker all played and performed well last season. Defensive end Willie Young has developed into a very good pass rusher. There is veteran leadership in the secondary paced by corners Jeremy Gray and DeAndre Morgan. One disturbing stat: State managed to intercept only 10 passes last year. That number will have to rise for the Wolfpack to improve its record from 2007.

A big bright spot last season was the place-kicking of Steven Hauschka. He came to State as a graduate student with only one year of eligibility and he made the most of it. Hauschka will long be remembered by the Wolfpack nation for his pressure kicks at Miami, a game State won in overtime. With Hauschka departed, sophomore Josh Czajkowski will be the new Wolfpack kicker. With the balance in the ACC this season, his leg might be the difference between victory and defeat in a number of games.

A glance at the schedule shows only two games where State will definitely be favored, September 6th at home against William & Mary and November 8th at Duke. There are tough road games to South Carolina and Clemson. A rising power from the sunshine state, South Florida, comes to Raleigh in early October. The schedule is every bit as challenging as a year ago beginning with the game against the Gamecocks on August 28th.

O'Brien was a quick study learning which games mean the most to Wolfpack fans, "I know our fans especially want to win when we play anybody with Carolina in their name." South Carolina, East Carolina, and North Carolina are all on the schedule this season. Whether or not the record improves in O'Brien's second season at State, the future is bright. NC State will not be an "easy out" for anyone.

2008 Preseason Information

2007 In Review
After a 1-5 start under new head coach Tom O’Brien, the Wolfpack rebounded to win four of their final six games and finished with a 5-7 overall record and a 3-5 conference mark, tying Maryland for 5th-place in the Atlantic Division... Injuries hampered State in the early going as TE Anthony Hill suffered a season-ending injury in pre-season camp, TB Toney Baker missed almost all of the season and TB Andre Brown missed four games... State’s 2nd half rebound was due to improved play from QB Daniel Evans and TB Jamelle Eugene as well as a defensive unit which ranked 25th nationally in pass efficiency defense behind the play of DE Willie Young, DT Alan-Michael Cash, Honorable Mention All-ACC DT DeMario Pressley and second-team All-ACC pick S DaJuan Morgan... Groza Award semifinalist Steven Hauschka missed only two kicks the entire season, making all 25 PATs and 16 of 18 FGs.

Who’s Gone
NC State loses 14 starters (six offense, seven defense and placekicker Steven Hauschka) from a year ago including the top three tacklers on defense--first-team All-ACC SS DaJuan Morgan and LBs James Martin and Ernest Jones, and three of the top five pass receivers on offense including WR’s John Dunlap and Darrell Blackman and TE Marcus Stone. Blackman, the first-team All-ACC choice as a specialist, was also one of the premier kick returners in ACC history ending up 10th on the ACC career kickoff return yardage list and eighth in career punt return yards... Also missed will be Honorable Mention All-ACC G Kalani Heppe and starting C Luke Lathan.

A Look Ahead
O’Brien begins his second season in Raleigh welcoming back 11 starters including six on offense in Ts Meares Green and Julian Williams, G Curtis Crouch, QB Daniel Evans, who threw for 1,572 yards and nine TDs in his final six games, and three TBs who have started for the Pack in Jamelle Eugene, who ran for 667 yards and started the final seven games of 2007, Andre Brown, who has 1,772 career yards, and Toney Baker, who has run for 1,272 yards in his career but suffered a season-ending knee injury in the opening game of 2007... Also returning is TE Anthony Hill, a second-team All-ACC selection in 2006 who suffered a season ending injury prior to preseason practice... Defensively, DE Willie Young, who led State in QB sacks and tackles for loss, is a rising star for the Pack, and DT Alan-Michael Cash, return along with Honorable Mention freshman All-America DT Markus Kuhn, while CBs Jeremy Gray and DeAndre Morgan are back in the secondary.

Numbers and Notes
2 - The number of Honorable Mention Freshmen All-Americas for NC State last season as DT Markus Kuhn and T Jake Vermiglio were both so honored by The Sporting News.

3 - The number of 100-yard rushing games for TB Jamelle Eugene in just seven games as a starter. Eugene topped the century mark against Florida State (101), Virginia (112) and North Carolina (159). If his receiving yardage is added in, Eugene topped 100 yards of combined yardage in five of his final seven games.

15 - The number of tackles for loss for junior DE Willie Young last year. Young was fourth in the ACC in tackles for loss.

25 - The Wolfpack’s national ranking for pass efficiency defense. State was also 28th nationally in overall pass defense

202 - The number of yards WR Donald Bowens accounted for against Virginia last year on 11 catches. His yardage was the second-highest by an ACC player in a single game in 2007.

3,743 - The passing yardage for QB Daniel Evans in his career heading into his season.

3,770 - The combined career rushing yardage of NC State’s returning tailbacks in Andre Brown (1,772), Toney (1,272) and Jamelle Eugene (726), which, if compiled together for one player would place them 10th on the all-time ACC career rushing list.

Head Coach Tom O'Brien

Tom O’Brien heads into his second season as the 33rd head football coach at NC State in the 116-year history of the program. His first Wolfpack team overcame injuries and a 1-5 start to post a four-game winning streak including triumphs over 21st-ranked Virginia, Miami and in-state rivals East Carolina and North Carolina to finish 5-7.

O’Brien came to Raleigh after spending 10 seasons as the head coach at Boston College, where he won more games than any coach in BC history. His squads also boasted some of the nation’s highest graduation rates during his tenure there. A 1971 graduate of the U. S. Naval Academy, O’Brien posted a 75-45 mark with the Eagles, engineering one of the most remarkable turnarounds in recent college football history. His 2006 squad won nine games for the third consecutive season and the fourth time in five years (the Eagles won their 10th game following O’Brien’s departure). It marked the sixth straight year and seventh time in eight years that BC had won at least eight games.

The Eagles advanced to eight consecutive bowls under O’Brien’s tutlege and have won their last eight bowl appearances-six coached by O’Brien-to record the longest active bowl game winning streak in the country.

O’Brien, 58, was the recipient of the American Football Coaches Association’s 2004 Academic Achievement Award for posting an 100% graduation rate. He received Honorable Mention status seven additional times during his tenure at BC. Boston College was ranked No. 1 in the country by USA Today when that publication recently reordered its 2005 regular season poll and the final 2005 Top 25 by APR score (Academic Progress Rate) to measure a combination of athletic and academic success.

Before coming to BC in 1997, O’Brien served as the offensive coordinator at the University of Virginia for six seasons and had been a member of the Cavaliers football staff since 1982. Virginia was consistently ranked among the top offensive teams in the ACC during his tenure there.
