Virginia Dominates UNC Asheville, 81-64

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) -Sean Singletary scored 20 points and J.R. Reynolds had 18 to lead Virginia to an 81-64 win over the University of North Carolina at Asheville Wednesday night in the first-ever meeting between the two schools.

The Cavaliers (3-0) opened up a 12-0 lead in the first five minutes and led throughout the game. Virginia went into halftime with a 38-22 lead and came out strong in the second half, leading by as many as 22 points with 14:25 left in the game.

No. 23 Men's Basketball Loses to Providence, 73-64

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Geoff McDermott had 18 points and 16 rebounds and Providence withstood Sean Williams' career-high 12 blocks to beat No. 23 Boston College 73-64 Wednesday night.

It was Williams' first action since he was suspended for two games for violating team rules. Sharaud Curry had 18 points, Weyinmi Efejuku 17 points and Jonathan Kale 11 for the Friars (2-1), who outrebounded BC 42-31 despite the 6-foot-10 Williams' presence in the middle.

No. 2 Tar Heels Upended By No. 23 Gonzaga, 82-74

NEW YORK (AP) - Derek Raivio scored 21 points to help Gonzaga upset No. 2 North Carolina 82-74 in the NIT Season Tip-Off semifinals Wednesday night.

Despite losing star Adam Morrison to the NBA after last season, Gonzaga didn't seem fazed playing against a top program on a big stage at Madison Square Garden. The Bulldogs (5-0) advanced to the championship game Friday night against Butler. In the first semifinal, Julian Betko scored 11 of his career-high 15 points in a decisive second-half run to give Butler a 56-44 victory over No. 22 Tennessee.

No. 19 Jackets Fall To No. 5 UCLA In Maui, 88-73

LAHAINA, Hawaii (AP) - UCLA added another one to its crowded trophy case. The fifth-ranked Bruins took control early with tenacious defense and hot shooting and beat No. 19 Georgia Tech 88-73 on Wednesday night in the championship game of the EA Sports Maui Invitational.

The Wayne Duke Trophy that's headed home with the Bruins might not be as impressive as the ones they have for their record 11 national championships, but there was little doubt it was theirs Wednesday night.
