Beyond the ACCtion: Behind the Scenes at Operation Basketball #ACCopbk
Oct. 20, 2010
Just thought we would share some of what you might not see from today's event. Hope you find this somewhat informative...
The 2010 ACC Operation Basketball is winding down, but not without a little drama. (Isn’t life more interesting when there is some drama, though?) When the media’s preseason predicted order of finish was released, there was one (1) little point that did not go unnoticed. There was some surprise that defending ACC and NCAA champion was not a unanimous favorite… one first-place vote went to North Carolina. Now you could write it off as a “Duke Hater” among the media, even Coach Williams laughed that it must have been a North Carolina grad that doesn’t like Duke, but that would be too easy.
Apparently the “voter” made an error on his ballot and even joked to someone else when the poll was released, “Who was the idiot who voted UNC first?” Alas, a vote is a vote and all ballots had been counted. Time to evaluate the results and move on. If you want to give the “voter” his 15 minutes of fame, go ahead.
And really, in the grand scheme of things, the preseason polls and accolades are really just fuel for the fire to give us all something to discuss, another way to keep ACC Basketball on your mind.
But also take it as a reminder when you go to the polls in November 2 to pay attention to who you vote for because that ballot carries a lot more weight.
The players and coaches were welcomed with a red-carpet treatment...
Even the cupcakes were in the ACC Operation Basketball spirit at ESPNU... Yummy!
When I found out that I was going to spend the most of the Operation Basketball at the ESPNU headquarters, the first thing that came to mind was those oh-so-popular ESPN commercials. You know the ones... shot in the Bristol offices with key sports figures in various roles and participating in numerous antics.
Granted, this is the smaller, southern-style version, nestled in the southeast outskirts of Charlotte. It still has a flavor of what we see in 30-second snippets from Bristol, especially today with a red carpet lining the entrance, the need for a "press pass" to enter the building and halls filled with a bustle of activity, familiar-faced commentators, a slew of production employees and volunteer hosts decked out in golf shirts of the 12 ACC schools.
To give you an idea of just how much is going on, check out the sign just inside the entrance which illustrates that point.
