![]() Dixon Scores 12 As Wizards Top Orlando
July 18, 2002 BOSTON - The Washington Wizards (1-2) dominated the Orlando Magic (1-1) in virtually every phase of the game on their way to a 88-63 victory at the Shaw's Pro Summer League. Former Maryland star Juan Dixon scored in double figures for the third time in as many games. The Wizards out-shot the Magic (52.7 percent to 37.5 percent), out-rebounded them (42-23) logged more assists (11-5) and steals (7-4). The only category in which the Magic led was turnovers (17-13). Bobby Simmons led five players in double-figures for the Wizards. Baskets by Simmons, Etan Thomas and Kris Lang gave the Wizards a 6-0 lead before the Magic knew what hit them. Simmons, Juan Dixon, and Lang combined for the Wizards' next 10 points to expand their lead to 16-8. They would never look back. Washington led 22-12 after one. Neither team shot well in the second quarter (33.3 percent each). Dixon, Simmons and Brian Brown combined to out-score the Magic 13-10 as the Wizards took a 39-22 lead at the half. Washington continued to pour it on in the third quarter as they shot 61.5 percent. They outscored the Magic 17-4 over the first 6:32 of the quarter to go ahead by as many as 28 points. William "Smush" Parker tried to keep the Magic in the game, scoring 7 points in the quarter but the Magic still held a 61-39 lead at the end of three. It was more of the same in the fourth as Washington's hot shooting continued. They went 13-for-20 (65.0 percent) led by Simmons (4-for-4 for 8 points in just 5 minutes). Lang added 14 points along with 8 rebounds, Dixon chipped in with 12 points and Thomas and Jared Jeffries each had 10 points and 8 rebounds for Washington. Ryan Hightower led the Magic with 10 points. Overall, Dixon shot 5-of-14 from the floor, addint two assists and two steals. He is currently the 12th-leading scorer in the nine-team league, averaging 15.0 points per game. Former Maryland center Mike Mardesich scored three points in 11 minutes off the bench. In the nightcap, former Terp Rodney Elliott came off the bench himself to score three points in 18 minutes as his San Antonio Spurs won a 79-55 rout over the Philadelphia 76ers.
Thursday's action at the Shaw League in Boston pits Washington against Minnesota at noon. Elliott and San Antonio are idle.
