![]() Day One At Shaw Summer League In Boston
July 15, 2002 BOSTON - Juan Dixon scored 11 points with six rebounds in his professional debut on Monday afternoon for the Washington Wizards at the Shaw Summer League in Boston. Meanwhile, Mike Mardesich saw 13 minutes of action for the Wizards and Rodney Elliott scored 12 points for the San Antonio Spurs in another Shaw League game. Dixon, the Final Four MVP from the 2002 Terrapins' national championship team, was making his pro debut after being chosen in the first round of the June NBA draft by the Wizards. Mardesich is making his second trip through the NBA summer leagues, having played last summer with both Boston and Utah. Elliott, who last played at Maryland in the 1997-98 season while helping the Terps to the Sweet Sixteen in Anaheim, is in his fifth summer of professional play. Last summer, he teammed with Mardesich on the Celtics' squad in the Shaw League which is held annually at the University of Massachusetts' campus in Boston. Dixon was the only Wizards' player to score in double figures and he contributed two steals in a 59-53 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks. A player who never fouled out of 141 career games at Maryland, Dixon picked up five fouls in 27 minutes of action, and was a part of a starting lineup that included fellow first-round draft pick Jared Jeffries of Indiana, former UNC star Brendan Haywood, Etan Thomas of Syracuse and Bobby Simmons of DePaul. Teaming with former college teammate Mardesich who was 0-for-2 from the field and 1-for-2 at the line, Dixon's inauspicious debut featured 3-of-14 shooting (1-for-5 from 3-point range) as neither team got untracked. Both teams shot just 37 percent from the floor and each team had 19 turnovers. Click here to review the Wizards/Bucks box score in Game 2 of the Shaw League. Expected to be on the Wizards' roster though cut last weekend after a preliminary training camp was former Terrapin Byron Mouton, a co-captain with Dixon on the Terps' NCAA title team. Elliott started for the Spurs and played 29 minutes during a 91-84 loss to the Atlanta Hawks. Click here to review the Spurs/Hawks box score in Game 1 of the Shaw League.
Tuesday's schedule has San Antonio facing Orlando at 2 p.m., and Washington pitted with the Celtics at 8 p.m. Both games will be televised on ESPN2.
