Atlanta Hawks Sign No. 2 Pick Marvin Williams
July 12, 2005
ATLANTA (AP) - The Hawks signed No. 2 overall draft pick Marvin Williams on Tuesday. The North Carolina forward, Atlanta's highest selection since picking first in 1975, is the last of the top 10 draft picks to sign. The 6-foot-9 Williams played one year for the NCAA champion Tar Heels before leaving early for the draft. He has been working out with the Hawks' summer league team the last two days. Terms of the contract were not disclosed. The 19-year-old Williams averaged 11.3 points for North Carolina and was second in rebounding with a 6.6 average. His tip-in with 1:26 remaining against Illinois in the NCAA title game broke a 70-all tie and propelled the Tar Heels to victory. As a senior at Bremerton High School in Bremerton, Wash., Williams averaged 28.7 points, 15.5 rebounds, five blocks and five assists and earned McDonald's and Parade All-America honors. Spain's Fran Vazquez, picked 11th overall by Orlando, is the highest unsigned draft pick. All but six of the 30 first-round picks have signed contracts.
