Doherty Named Head Coach at Carolina
July 11, 2000 The University of North Carolina will introduce Matt Doherty as its new head men's basketball coach at a press conference this evening at 7:30 p.m. at the Smith Center. The press conference will take place in the Bowles Room, located on the ground floor of Koury Natatorium. Doherty, a 1984 graduate of the University of North Carolina, posted a 22-15 record last year at the University of Notre Dame. It was his first season as a collegiate head coach. He spent seven years as an assistant coach at the University of Kansas and three years as an assistant at Davidson College.
Doherty played for the Tar Heels from 1980-84 and was a starter on the 1982 team that won the NCAA championship. Doherty was joined on that team by fellow starters James Worthy, Michael Jordan, Sam Perkins and Jimmy Black.
