Josh Powell catches on with Dallas for summer league games.

July 7, 2003

By Tony Haynes

After being passed over on draft night, former NC State center Josh Powell has caught on with the Dallas Mavericks' summer league team, which will play 12 games over a three week period at the Summer Pro League in Long Beach, California and Rocky Mountain Review in Salt Lake City throughout the month of July. Joining Powell on the Mavs' squad is another ACC alum---Wake Forest's Josh Howard, who was taken by Dallas in the first round of last month's draft.

Following a sophomore campaign during which he averaged 12.4 points and 5.3 rebounds for the Wolfpack, the 6-9 Powell decided to give up his final two years of college eligibility in order to make himself available for the NBA Draft. But in a year that saw a record 17 of the 58 available draft positions taken up by foreign players, Powell was not selected.

Although remote, Powell's chances of landing an NBA roster spot could hinge on just how well he performs in the summer leagues. Most summer league rosters consist of drafted and undrafted rookies, although there are a handful of veterans who will also participate.

Powell will make his summer league debut in Long Beach against the Lakers on July 7 at 3:45 p.m.
